Equity Release

A product launched in the 1970s to a very niche non regulated market, this product slowly grew until the early 1990s when it became more popular but fell outside of full regulation. It was therefore “self regulated” with the formation of SHIP (Safe home Income Plans) in 1991 to establish safeguards for customers including a “no negative equity guarantee” and a “right of tenure guarantee”, all these are still built into today's products that are now covered by the Equity Release Council. These products are now also fully regulated by the FCA and require an advised process to sell them.

Product options include the ability to pay interest, interest and some capital, or roll up the interest each month. Also still available are Reversion schemes. For a more detailed explanation of these products please visit www.whatisequityrelease.co.uk.
